Anna Wintour, from my perspective as an outsider, seemed to get on well with Edward Enninful. They were not close, but they did respect each other. Wintour supported Enninful during his tenure as British Vogue's editor-in chief. Wintour's reported drama is often misconstrued. She has effectively consolidated her position at Conde Nast and acts as the kingmaker and queenmaker of many Conde Nast publications and EICs. Enninful was always at Wintour’s pleasure. Enninful's departure is therefore interesting.

Vogue Business announced Friday that Edward Enninful would step down from his position as editor-in chief of the UK edition of fashion bible next year. Enninful is still moving up the Conde Nast ladder and will take on a new position as an editorial adviser for British Vogue, and a global cultural and creative advisor for Vogue.

Enninful wrote in an internal memo sent to the heads for editorial content of Vogue France (who report to him), Vogue Italia (who also report to him), Vogue Spain, and Vogue Germany that he and Anna Wintour had "been discussing how I could play a larger role to enhance Vogue globally."

Enninful added, "I'm excited to announce that I will begin next year in the newly created position of editorial adviser of British Vogue as well as global creative and culture advisor for Vogue."

Enninful said that his new role will allow him to "take on broader creative project". The Ghanaian/British creative, who has been with Conde for over 25 years, also revealed plans to hire an editorial director for British Vogue.

The Telegraph has been the only major publication to run this story, presenting it as a potentially scandalous situation, suggesting that there is some sort of "rift" or "power struggle" between Enninful, and Wintour. From where I'm sitting, it appears that Enninful has been promoted, and will be Wintour’s second-in-command when it comes her global vision of Conde Nast’s publications.

Do I also believe that this "promotion' was intended to get him removed from the EIC position at British Vogue? Perhaps. Enninful's modernization of one of the most stuffy Vogues has been widely praised, but his modernizations are not overwhelmingly welcomed, especially in the British Vogue and fashion communities. I wonder if Wintour is mad at Enninful for landing some exclusives like the Beyonce cover from last year.
