Pageboy is a memoir by Elliot Page. It's one of my favorites titles from recent years. It's perfect. Elliot seems to be in a good place and I'm glad he is sharing his story. He was on the cover for People's Pageboy book promotion, and shared juicy details with them. What's the most juicy story? Elliot said he had an affair with Kate Mara in 2014, while she was seeing Max Minghella. Elliot said it showed a pattern of his life, where he attracted unavailable people.

Page writes, "The first woman I fell in love with after my heart had been broken was Kate Mara." She had a boyfriend, the talented and lovely Max Minghella.

Page continues to describe their relationship, which took place while Page was filming X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014. Page says that Kate has read the book. Mara will appear with Page in Los Angeles at a book signing in June. Page writes that Minghella encouraged Mara to explore her feelings towards Page. Page writes that Mara told her: "I never imagined I could love two people, but now I know I am able to."

Page describes the time as a period of exploration, but also heartbreak. "I think that my relationship with Kate, or whatever name you choose to give it, encapsulates the dynamic I found myself in. I fell for people who were not fully available, and I'm sure many of us have done this. The safety of that, the highs and lows, the serotonin boost and then the disappearance.

"I think it is a pattern that I have followed in my life," Page says. Page claims that he and Mara remain close. "I believe that the love and care we have for one another is a very special thing. "I write about intimacy, but it is separate from that."

Max Minghella's acceptance of Kate and Elliot being in a relationship is impressive. Many guys would have responded in a territorial manner or felt emasculated. Kate must have told Max about Max's relationship with Kate early on. I will need to read the whole book to get the full story. In the American culture, we are quick to judge infidelity and polyamorous relationships. In stories like these, I approach them with curiosity and not judgment. Kate and Elliot must have had a very intense and meaningful relationship.

Elliot was very perceptive to recognize that he had a tendency to be drawn to people when they were not completely available. This pattern makes sense to me for people who have been subjected societal programming or shame because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Or for other reasons. You'll naturally be drawn to people who don't fully accept you for who you really are if you believe that you're unlovable or won't get accepted as you truly are. You deserve that, society says. He describes a "safety", which may seem counterintuitive but I understand what he means. It feels safe, because it's familiar. You don't need to be fully available if you aren't seeing the person. Elliot is still Kate's friend, and I find that sweet. It's great when ex-partners are still friends. This isn't something that happens all the time.

Elliot shares in his book a blind story about a famous gay actor who verbally harassed him in 2014 at a party, after he came out. The actor told him some horrible things, such as "you're not gay, that doesn’t exist." You are just afraid of the men. Multiple witnesses and hearers heard this. Elliot should have named names, and called this man out. But I understand why he did not. Hollywood presents itself as a progressive, forward-thinking industry. It's not. It's not. It's not hard for Hollywood stars to be racist, sexists, homophobics, transphobics, etc. It's been that way for a long time.
