The royal commentators have tried to sugarcoat Queen Elizabeth's Accession Day/Jubbly Statement. Liz stated that Camilla would be the Queen Consort title when it comes. Many people thought "well, that was always going to be happen" and it is true that Charles has planned to name Camilla his Queen consort for many years. He will do it shortly after his mother's death. Charles has maintained publicly that Camilla will not be called Princess Consort. This is a fancy title to please those who still love Diana. Charles's mother stated that these words were part of his plan. Charles clearly uses his 95-year old mother to legitimize the mistress-wife. How will this all end in the long-term? As I mentioned, royal commentators are trying hype this sh*t. However, a few are saying, "Not so fast."
This announcement was made by the queen on Saturday night at 10pm. It occurred on the eve the 70th anniversary of her accession. It is most likely to reduce the chance that Sunday newspapers will have enough time to provoke trouble with opposing voices. On a day when criticism of the hardworking monarch would be considered treachery, it was also unusually late.
All have agreed to the positive take on the major news and are now awash in positive commentary. Even the normally republican Daily Mirror has a comment saying that Camilla "earned her spurs."
This isn't going to be an easy sell long-term for the palace. After all, the "princess consort device" was created for a reason.
Christopher Andersen, the author of Brothers and Wives, is one of the most insightful royal commentators in recent years. He told The Daily Beast that Charles always wanted Camilla to be his queen. All promises made to the contrary were only to make it easier for him to marry. Surprisingly, the queen agreed to make this announcement immediately after being pressured. It would be amazing if this is accepted by the British people.
"There is still a lot of affection for Diana, and some bitterness toward Camilla. The queen is clearly trying to prepare her subjects in advance for Charles becoming king. It seems a bit foolish for the queen to spend her political capital in this way, at a time when the family is embroiled in more scandal than usual. This is another in a long line of tone-deaf moves by the royal family.
[From The Daily Beast]
"...For a queen to spend her political capital in this way--when the family are mired in more scandal than usual----seems patently foolish ..." This also highlights the fact the Queen has never shown this level of support for the Duke and Duchess, who were being ripped to pieces on a daily basis. The Queen can go out of her way to express her wishes for Camilla's future title, but the Queen can't say one f-king word about the racism directed at her granddaughter-in-law? Despite this, Liz did probably sign off that someone believes that it is tone deaf. She has always been tone-deaf. She has never been able to discern "how things look" and "what the British will tolerate."
